Dear Mattie Washburn Community:
As you may be aware, last night Mattie Washburn suffered an act of vandalism. Two students from Windsor High School broke into campus, and vandalized several classrooms. They were apprehended by deputies from Windsor Police and taken into custody. WPD’s press release regarding the incident can be found here: https://www.facebook.com/TownofWindsorPoliceCA/posts/824342653220614
We are thankful for WPD’s quick action, and for our strong relationship with them. While we are upset about this terrible act, we are proud to say our WUSD family has come together to make sure there are no lasting effects. Our maintenance and custodial crews are on site cleaning up the mess and repairing the damage, and we are confident we will be able to open as normal for school tomorrow, with all students going to their normal classrooms.
The two students will be facing both school and legal consequences, as vandalism is not only a violation of the education code, but also the penal code.
We know incidents like this are upsetting, especially since our students are so young. Rest assured we will be doing all we can to shield them from this incident as much as possible, but will also have our counseling staff alerted to provide any support necessary for our staff and students.
As Mr. Rogers famously said, in times of crisis, look for the helpers. We are proud that at Mattie and in Windsor, helpers abound from our law enforcement partners, to our custodial and maintenance staff, to our administrators who were on site first thing this morning. We will see you tomorrow!
-Your WUSD and MWE Team
